Can I go to college with LD?

I was born at 26 weeks 1 pound 3 oz my name is Jennifer and I’m 22 and have a learning disibilty

A month or two ago I was told by my voc-rehab consoler that going to college would be bad for me because of my learning disibilty. She says I could work at a school being a janitor I was looking at her like WTF I was really upset because she was making me feeling like there is no hope for me in this world! (it’s not a bad job) I just want to go to college and be a vet or occupational therapist
I struggle alot in math and moderate in all the rest all my scores are over a 4-5 grade LVL

My mom passed away in October she knew my disibilty better then I could ever know… I wish she was here to tell me what to do

Lots of people with learning disabilities go to college. If you are at a 4-5 grade level, then you would need to start with some remedial classes to get you to a college level. Ask your voc-rehab counselor if she would help you find a way to raise the 4-5 grade level things to 8 grade level (then maybe you could move on to 10 or 12 grade level later).

On your own, you will need to start reading. Read anything that you are interested in. When you go to pick out a book, try to read a paragraph. If you can’t read 3 words, then put the book back and find another, because if reading is too hard, it won’t be fun and you will give up too easily.

Read every day, for at least 30 minutes, anything you want to read. This will not only help improve your reading level, but also the more you read, the more you learn about the world and the more it will help get your other levels from 4-5 grade to 8 grade or more.

You can start with being a janitor now. Most of the adults around you started at a low-end job — waiting tables, mowing grass, washing dishes, mopping floors — and only moved to better jobs after they had some experience. The job you start with is just your start — not the place you will end up. Being able to take care of yourself will help you feel more able to do this.

You could also see if you could work in a vet’s office as a janitor or dog walker or whatever they might need. It’s a starting job that might help you learn some of what you need to become a vet or a vet tech.

You are smart to understand that your voc-rehab counselor is trying to help you but that no one can put a limit on what you can do. Your mother would not have wanted you to give up your dreams. She would have wanted you to work on them — it’s what all mothers want for their children. Even if it takes 10 years, it’s always worth working toward a dream.
